Roslyn 2009 – Introduction

SPRING 2009 History Nestled in the heart of the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains, 2,222 feet above sea level, lies the town of Roslyn, Washington.  Founded with the discovery of coal in conjunction with the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1886, the town’s original population was due almost entirely to the coal industry.

Roslyn 2009 – Stories.Paths

SPRING 2009 Stories/Paths Roslyn has a rich history that is currently underrepresented.  Visitors to Roslyn often have a difficult time navigating their way through town, thus wayfinding is a necessary tool to aid a visitor’s experience.

Roslyn 2009 – SPCoalMinerStory

“My name is Gloria, but people knew me as Tony Bailey.  Women weren’t allowed in the mines so I dressed myself as a man to get work.  I would take out women to local bars to keep up my male appearance.  I was discovered exiting the women’s restroom one night, and arrested on the spot.”

“During the Depression, I came to Roslyn from California to make home repairs.  I was usually paid with a hot meal and a warm smile.  The youngsters would sit around the fire while I told them stories into the night.  My handiwork can still be found in Roslyn homes.”
